Habits of Mind:

Treating Anxiety and Stress.

I have developed Habits of Mind Principles from thirty years of clinical work. It was driven by my desire to offer an effective therapy for anxiety that not only addresses symptoms, but seeks to alter the fundamental mental patterns that generate and sustain anxiety, stress, irritability and anger. It is an approach that I use daily in my own life to keep a sense of balance and perspective.

Through years of clinical observation, I have identified and targeted self-defeating, habitual modes of thought that are created by, and, in turn, increase and perpetuate anxiety. Habits of Mind offers practical tools to break-down anxiety and stress states of mind trough four main focal points: Control, Acceptance, Quality of Thinking and Time.

Habits of Mind Principles help develop new “practices of thought”, retraining the fundamental orientation of the mind. This is the core of the Habits of Mind work. Habits of Mind is supported by secondary concepts that I have developed, including problem recognition, self-integrity reflection, life orientation, and affect regulation strategies for anger and anxiety.

While developed to address anxiety the cognitive tools of Habits of Mind are also effective in addressing control issues, perfectionism and the haphazard academic habits associated with ADHD.

Process Orientation: Reducing Stress at School and Work.

Whether a student or an employed adult, many of us feel intense anxiety and stress around work. This often includes highly successful people who pay for their achievement with a significant emotional toll. Other times, perfectionism or fear of failure lead to procrastination and missed deadlines. I help clients develop a growth-orientated mindset that focuses on the process over outcome and expectations.

The same Habits of Mind that create anxiety also underlie much of the stress experienced by students and adults in their work. We isolate the underlying values and modes of thought that lead to anxiety and re-train the mind toward a process/growth orientation.
