About Me.

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I was a Ph.D. student in anthropology. Anthropology was a fascinating discipline, but I felt the need for something more immediately helpful. The training I received in anthropology, to put aside pre-conceptions and observe not only from my perspective, but from inside the ‘other's’ perspective, has been essential in my work as a psychotherapist.

After receiving a Masters of Social Work at New York University I completed post-graduate training in adult psychotherapy at the National institute of the Psychotherapies Four-Year Program in Comprehensive Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. This was a wonderfully immersive experience that provided me with a solid foundation as psychotherapist. . After graduating I spent an even longer period of time trying to put aside what I learnt. As much as I wanted to have a clear knowledge and command of psychotherapy, I felt it important to be able to see past the way received ideas shapes what we see, to find what is therapeutic, what fosters growth and what doesn’t.

Concurrent with post-graduate training, I worked for many years as a psychotherapist consultant in District 15 schools, working with educators and students, providing a window into the school life of children and adolescents.

For the last fifteen years I’ve had the opportunity to teach both child/adolescent and adult psychotherapy in a number of settings. Having to explain theory and practice has clarified and deepened my own clinical work. I have taught child and adolescent psychotherapy at Brooklyn College, Graduate School in Psychology. I am faculty and clinical training supervisor for adult psychotherapy at the post-graduate training centers, The National Institute of the Psychotherapies and the Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. I am also a founding co-director and former faculty of NIP’s training program, Relational Approaches to Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. I am fully licensed as a therapist in New York State.
